Bank history

1998 year -

Mercy Corps started to implement the first-ever microlending program in Kyrgyzstan.

1998 year -

Mercy Corps launched its own program for lending to small and medium-sized businesses. At the time, Mercy Corps was the first organization in Kyrgyzstan that offered loans for small and medium-sized businesses to individual entrepreneurs.

2003 year -

Mercy Corps and its five microcredit agencies made a landmark decision to consolidate assets throughout Kyrgyzstan for the purposes of establishing a national community development financial institution―Kompanion. In February the program was registered as the local microcredit agency, and Mercy Corps became its founder.

2004 year -

In October, Kompanion was registered with the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic.

2005 year -

Kompanion and Mercy Corps launched a joint project "Yabloko", which framework included trainings on the proper care of the fruitery gardens, held for the communities of Tosor and Tamga villages in the Issyk-Kul region

2006 year -

Kompanion began holding annual apple festivals. The reason behind the first festival was the desire of Kompanion employees to help rural communities in the Issyk-Kul region to develop horticulture and strengthen market ties between sellers and buyers of agricultural products.

2007 year -

The project "Gardens and Plastic" was launched aiming at reducing the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment of the Issyk-Kul region. Campaigns to collect plastic were held in many areas of the region. The project participants received press machines for plastic waste as a gift from Kompanion, as well as assistance in selling the collected plastic for its further processing. More than 200 tons of plastic waste were removed from the territory of the region.

2009 year -

"The "Ecology and Gardens" project was launched, which is dedicated to the management of agricultural waste and the further development of horticulture in the country. Within the framework of this project, 30 communities from all regions of Issyk-Kul oblast and Kochkor region of Naryn oblast. 3,000 project participants were trained in seasonal agro-technical gardening, and also convinced of the need for proper management of agricultural waste. Community residents began to understand the importance of using organics in the preparation of fertilizers for the soil."

2010 year -

A community technical support department has been created, which includes 32 highly qualified specialists in the field of agronomy and veterinary. " This year, as part of the "Waste Management" and "Eco San" projects, construction works for composting facilities and sanitary landfills were launched.

2013 year -

The initiatives 'EcoGarden' and 'Livestock Management' have been launched, aiming to actively educate the population on the use of organic fertilizers. Additionally, in remote high-altitude communities this year, the 'Suitcase Garden' and 'Greenhouse' projects have commenced, with the goal of enhancing food security in the country.

2014 year -

Project “Smart Investments and Smart Savings”. Every year Kompanion Bank develops a package of materials for rural residents with examples of “smart investments” and “smart savings”. Materials were developed on the following topics: “Intensive fattening of bulls” and “Culling of livestock”, which are aimed at reducing the pressure on pastures, strengthening livestock breeding and increasing incomes of the population.

2015 year -

The Asyl Mal project has been launched, which aims to educate the population on the proper maintenance of dairy cows and the efficient use of pastures. With this aim, Kompanion began to educate the population of remote regions of the country, developing a training course on “Pasture and Livestock Management”. Also, as part of the project, the bank developed and implemented preferential credit facilities.

2016 year -

Kompanion Bank received a banking license. In the same year, within the framework of the "Bekkari Utilization Pits" project, Kompanion Bank provided financial and consulting support to two communities in the Ak-Suu district of the Issyk-Kul region for the construction of a Bekkari pit. The implementation of this project enabled the proper disposal of livestock carcasses and animal husbandry waste through biothermal disinfection, contributing to the reduction of contamination and the preservation of pastures.

2017 year -

Project “Protection of pastures from plastic waste”. Kompanion Bank also conducted trainings on the dangers of plastic waste for pastures, several times initiated environmental campaigns to clean up pastures from plastic waste.

2018 year -

Kompanion Bank participates in organizing financial literacy trainings for the population.

2020 year -

Training modules are being developed to educate different segments of the population, such as migrant families, migrants, students and schoolchildren and others, on financial literacy. Every year Kompanion Bank conducts more than 1,000 trainings for 10,000 participants.

2023 year -

Kompanion Bank received an award in "Bank of the Year for promoting QR-code payments" nomination class from the Interbank Processing Center.

2023 year -

Kompanion Bank was the first in the Kyrgyz Republic to join the Global Association of Banking Values (GABV)

Кompanion Bank has earned the title of the best company for creating conditions and infrastructure for individuals with disabilities, as well as being recognized as the 'Best Regional Employer' in the 'Cheksiz' competition.

Kompanion Bank join the global alliance for banking on values (GABV)

CJSC Kompanion Bank is the first in the Kyrgyz Republic to join the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GAVB). This decision was announced at the Alliance's annual meeting on April 18 in New York.

The Bank of the Year for Advancing QR Code Payments

In 2021, Companion Bank was awarded the title of 'Bank of the Year for Advancing QR Code Payments' by the Interbank Processing Center.

EUROPEAN MICROFINANCE AWARD

In November 2014, Kompanion became the first organization in Central Asia to have the honor of winning the 5th European Microfinance Award. The Award is granted to financial institutions for their innovative ideas with a view to promote best practices.

CLIENT PROTECTION PRINCIPLES

In April 2017, the Kompanion Bank successfully passed the independent certification of the rating agency MicroFinanza Rating, once again confirming the implementation of the principles of protecting customers globally promoted by Smart Campaign.

"Α-" rating

In April 2014, Kompanion received an "α-" rating from international rating agency M-CRIL (Micro-Credit Ratings International Limited). This high insitutional rating signifies that Kompanion is a sustainable and financially sound organization focused on building long-term relationships with clients.

Bank of the Year for Promoting QR Code Payments

In 2023, Bank Companion was recognized as the "Bank of the Year for Elcart Contactless Card Issuance."

Bank with a social mission

Kompanion Bank provides financial as well as non-financial services that contribute to improving the economic and social situation of communities and caring for the environment. We also adhere to the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategy, considering environmental, social and corporate governance aspects in our activities. We have highly qualified agronomy and livestock professionals in our bank who are ready to provide advice and free training to gardeners and farmers, especially those living in remote regions of the country.

Educational agricultural programs

• Eco-garden initiative. We provide information on how to care for fruit trees, create new orchards, harvest and store crops, as well as build cellars and use fertilizers. The trainings also include financial literacy and healthy eating. • Development of Livestock Management (LM) Initiative. We teach livestock care from purchase to end of life, including the prevention of infectious and parasitic diseases, housing and fattening of livestock. • Agricultural consultations. We provide our clients with agricultural advice, brochures and leaflets that help them learn how to save and invest for the future.

• Financial Literacy Trainings include planning a family budget, accounting for unexpected expenses, assessing savings opportunities and step-by-step achievement of financial goals. • Digital Literacy Trainings help our clients master the basics of online safety and protect themselves from Internet fraud.

• Corporate social responsibility (CSR). We are committed to conscious charitable activities, stewardship of the environment, investing in people, maintaining high standards of consumer responsibility and partnering with local governments and communities. • Apple festival. This is an annual event hosted by the Bank since 2006 where entrepreneurs meet buyers and present a wide range of products including fresh fruits, handicrafts, confectionery and more. The festival also offers the opportunity to receive advice from agronomists of Kompanion Bank.

Cherikbaeva Margarita Shaimovna

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

From March 12, 2018 Margarita Cherikbaeva was appointed as a CEO of Kompanion Bank CJSC. Prior to joining Kompanion Bank, Margarita had been CEO of Finca Bank from 2015. From 2011 to 2015 she held position of the Chief Operating Officer in Finca Bank. Prior to that, Margarita Cherikbaeva supervised the work of the business units associated with German bank ProCredit Holding in the Caucasus, West Africa and Latin America. She has many years experience in consulting work in West Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Margarita Cherikbaeva obtained a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Trier (Germany), and in 2023, she successfully defended her dissertation and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from the Paris School of Business.

On the 3rd of April 2018, Kubanychbek Bapa uulu was appointed as Deputy Chairperson of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC. "On the 3rd of April 2018, Kubanychbek Bapa uulu was appointed as Deputy Chairperson of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC. Before joining Kompanion, he was CEO of Dos-Credobank OJSC from 2014 to March 2018, where he had previously worked as Deputy Chairperson of the Management Board from 2012. From October 2010, he served as Crediting Manager, and in February 2012, he became Member of the Management Board of Dos-Credobank OJSC. From February to September 2010, he combined the positions of Head of the Crediting Division for International Financial Institutions Program and CEO Adviser. He began his professional career in Energobank OJSC (from 2004 – ATFBank Kyrgyzstan OJSC), where, from 2004 to 2010, he successfully passed every stage of professional growth from Specialist of the Crediting Sector on the EBRD line to Branch Director. He graduated from the K. Tynystanov Issyk-Kul State University and holds two diplomas: mathematics and system programming, as well as accounting, analysis and audit."

Natalia Germanovna Fefilova

On the 3rd of April 2018, Natalia Fefilova was appointed as Member of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC. "On the 3rd of April 2018, Natalia Fefilova was appointed as Member of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC. Before joining Kompanion, she had worked at LFS Financial Systems GmbH German consulting company since 2011, where she took part in the implementation of the EBRD project in North Caucasus (RF) and spearheaded the German Development Bank’s (KfW) project in Uzbekistan. Both projects were aimed at supporting commercial banks which worked in the micro- and SME financing sector. In addition, she was responsible for the development of micro-financing and all of the operations of AccessBank (related to LFS) in Tajikistan. From 2005 to 2010, Natalia Fefilova served at IPC GmbH German consulting company in the micro- and SME financing sector and HR management in ProCredit Banks in Sierra-Leone and Mexico. She also participated in the implementation of the micro- and SME financing projects in Kyrgyz Republic and Russian Federation. Natalia Fefilova has an 8-year work experience in Central Asia. She has an Economics MBA from the University of Kassel (Germany)."

Damir Dosumbetov Kylychbekovich

DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD

In the autumn of 2017 Damir Dosumbetov was appointed to the position of Chief Credit Officer of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC. In 2004 he graduated from the Kyrgyz National University in the specialty "Finance and Credit". In 2009 Damir received a law degree in the field of "Civil Legal Activity". In 2005 he started his career at the position of retail lending specialist department in Ineximbank CJSC. 2006 to 2008 held leading positions at Finance Credit Bank KAB: Head of the Mortgage and Consumer Lending; Acting Head of Corporate Lending Department as well as Head of Sales Department. In 2008 Damir joined the Kompanion as a senior credit administrator. Four years later he headed the department of credit administration and showed himself to be a skilful manager. In the autumn of 2017 Damir Dosumbetov was appointed to the position of Chief Credit Officer of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC.

Satibaldiev Maksatbek Satibaldievich

DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD

Maksatbek Satibaldiev joined Kompanion Bank in 2018 as a Project manager and, in two years, was promoted to Chief Accountant, and in October 2023, he accepted the post of Deputy CEO/Chief Financial Officer. Maksatbek Satibaldiev graduated with honors from the Academy of Management under the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2005. Before joining Kompanion Bank, he served as Chief Financial Officer at CJSC Ijara Company Kyrgyzstan. Maksatbek also gained extensive experience at Kyrgyz Investment and Credit Bank CJSC, where he managed to build a career from Accountant to Deputy Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chief Operating Officer. While working in various business divisions, such as the Accounting and Reporting Department, the Branch Opening and Support Department, and the Mobile Financial Services Department, he was actively involved in improving processes and introducing innovative products.

Seleznev Dmitry Ivanovich

DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD

In August 2024, Dmitry Seleznev was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Kompanion Bank CJSC. In 2009, he graduated from the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University named after B.N. Yeltsin with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Informatics. Dmitry began his banking career in 2014 at FINCA Bank CJSC, where he established himself as an expert in digital solutions and financial technologies. In 2021, Dmitry joined Kompanion Bank, making a significant contribution to the development of the bank's IT infrastructure by working on the modernization of internal systems and improving digital services for customers. In his new role, Dmitry is responsible for the strategic development of technological areas, including accelerating the bank’s digital transformation, implementing modern fintech solutions, and enhancing cybersecurity. His key priorities are to create innovative platforms for remote customer service, automate internal processes, and integrate advanced technologies—such as cloud solutions and artificial intelligence—to improve operational efficiency and enhance the customer experience.
